Performance assessment of a tightly baffled, long-legged divertor configuration in TCV with SOLPS-ITER

Abstract Numerical simulations explore a possible tightly baffled, long-legged divertor (TBLLD) concept in future upgrade of the Tokamak à configuration variable (TCV). The SOLPS-ITER code package is used to compare exhaust performance several TBLLD configurations with results from unbaffled and baffled TCV configurations. investigated TBLLDs feature range radial gaps between separatrix baffles, smaller gap resulting tighter baffling. All modelled are predicted lead denser colder plasma front targets increase power handling by factors 2-3 compared present, up factor 12 original, unbaffled, configuration. This improved attributed an increased neutral confinement more plasma-neutral interactions region. Both capability core compatibility nitrogen seeding also evaluated detachment window, acceptable pollution, for these explored, showing reduction required upstream impurity concentration achieve 18%
